Man shot, found dead in Malta home

    By James De La Fuente,

MALTA, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The Saratoga County Sheriff’s office is investigating a shooting death that occurred midday on Friday. NEWS10 was on scene for most of the day and has the latest on the developments into the case.

“There is no threat to the public. We will be releasing more information when it’s appropriate,” said Saratoga County Sheriff Mike Zurlo.

Zurlo says his deputies were called out to a home for a reported shooting around 11:30 Friday morning.  Zurlo tells me deputies arrived on scene and they found a dead man inside the house they were called to.

NEWS10 reporter James De La Fuente spoke with a neighbor who has lived at Northway Estate Park for five years and says she loves it here. She also said the homeowner’s association sent residents an email explaining the law enforcement presence.

NEWS10 was able to get ahold of that email from another resident who also said Northway Estates was a great place to live and that this was very unexpected. In the email to residents it says in part, “From what we understand, a person came to visit someone who lives here – the visitor must have walked into the wrong house – the owner of the house assumed it was an intruder and apparently shot the person.”

NEWS10 has reached out to the sheriff’s office to confirm the information in the letter and is awaiting a further response.  But what the sheriff did say is that they are not able to notify the next of kin, just yet. The investigation remains active.

You may remember, two weeks ago NEWS10 reported about a homicide involving a man and a large wrench . That homicide took place just a couple of miles down the road from where this scene occurred.

And as concerning as that may seem, the sheriff says this is not a common occurrence. “It’s unfortunate for the people here in the mobile home park, it’s above 55. They’re somewhat shocked as to what took place here. But no, it’s not a daily occurrence here in Malta or any other place in the county,” stated Zurlo.

This is a developing story and NEWS10 will keep you updated both on air and online as soon as more information is available.
