The Crook County Cowgirls finished third Saturday, April 27 at the Steve Rankin Invitational Tennis Tournament in Madras.

The eight-team tournament was played in a round robin format with each of the eight schools’ No. 1 singles playing seven games against each other, with No. 2 singles players facing each other and No. 1 and No. 2 doubles doing the same.

Players earn a point for each game they win, with the team that earns the most total points winning the tournament.

Baker won the event with 141 points. They were followed by Stayton, 126, Crook County, 117, Cascade, 110, Madras White, 107, Sisters, 65, Henley, 63, and Madras Blue, 56. Estacada was scheduled to participate in the tournament, but were unable to attend, so the host White Buffalos added a second team from Madras.

Crook County’s Sami Ramos won all seven of her matches, but finished in second in the No. 1 singles division. Ramos finished with 38 points, however, Stayton’s Laina Atiyeh, who Ramos beat 4-3, won the division with 41 points.

At No. 2 singles, Crook County’s Kristianna Boyum finished in sixth place in the division with 18 points. Baker’s Liz Timm won with 39 points, while Stayton’s Lorelei Ritchie was second with 35 points. In No. 1 doubles play, Delaney Engstrom and Haven Housley placed fourth with 30 points, while Baker’s Olivia Jacoby and Kaitlyn Schwin won with 41 points. Katie Ryan and Shea Wyland of Sisters finished second with 33 points, while Rachel Sueizie and Kate Withers were third also with 30 points. Although Sueizie and Withers had the same number of points as Engstrom and Housley, they earned third place with a 4-3 win in their head-to-head matchup.

In No. 2 doubles action, Cascade’s Kahryn Delamarter and Samantha Sandall took first with 43 points. Yashira Chavaro and Arely Alonso of Madras finished second with 34 points, while Crook County’s Aubrie Olson and Mikayla Giard finished third with 30 points.

The Cowgirls are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Molalla to take on the Indians.
