Allen Roberts hoped for a showcase of his offense ahead of the postseason.

He got more than just that. The Lady Chiefs combined for 20 hits with three home runs and two players with five RBIs each in an 18-10 District 3-2A win over South-Doyle in Madisonville.

BriAsya Bowman and Alicia Kimble notched five RBIs each, followed by three from Tynleigh Ray and two from Shae Ahlstrom. Kaleigh Atchley, TeAsya Cozart and Megan Ladd forced runs across as well.

Bowman, Kimble and Ray all homered while Ahlstrom, Atchley and Lilly Griffitts contributed to eight extra-base hits in Sequoyah’s come-from-behind win.

“It is what we are going to need to be. I felt like all week our offense has looked really good,” Sequoyah coach Allen Roberts said. “The offense … We really had to have it and it came through well. We hit the ball really well, I was really happy to see that.”

The Lady Chiefs (11-7; 6-2) combined for 35 runs, 43 hits and 17 extra-base hits this week.

Sequoyah was held to one hit before falling behind 5-0, but the deficit was quickly undone. Kimble’s two-out double in the second inning opened the scoring.

The contest was tied one inning later off Ray’s three-run home run. Ladd tagged up for Sequoyah’s first lead via an Atchley flyout.

Kimble’s two-run home run in the fifth inning broke another tie, now 9-7 in favor of the hosts. Bowman sent out a three-run blast later that frame for a six-run lead and the final go-ahead runs.

Ahlstrom, Bowman and Griffitts led Sequoyah with three hits. Bella Hall, Kimble and Ladd all had multi-hit days.

“(Bowman) stepped up big and had a really good game in a game that was really good for her. She needed that,” Roberts said. “As the game went, she kept performing well in the offense.”

Bowman is another sophomore who has settled in for Sequoyah this spring.

“She is young and has a ton of power. She is one of those young players that we are going to need to step up and help us as an offense,” Roberts added. “We really need a few of them to step up and she did.”

While the offense powered things ahead, Hall slowed things down from the circle to open the window.

Hall stepped into a deficit, but she held an offense that had four hits for five runs to zero hits before Sequoyah took the lead.

“She did really good. We fell down there and really had to come in and put the brakes on them to allow our offense to get going,” Roberts said.

South-Doyle was held to two hits in the next two innings. Hall and the Lady Chiefs' defense combined for zero walks and one error from the third inning beyond.

“She was pretty consistent over the next (few innings). It allowed the offense to really get us back in the ballgame,” Roberts said. “I thought she did a really good job there. It is what we are going to need in the district tournament.”

Sequoyah finished second in the league standings behind Heritage. South-Doyle finished third while No. 4 Lenoir City will host No. 5 Loudon in the district’s lone play-in game.
