Five teens facing charges after Tucson-area school vandalized
TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Five teens are facing charges after a Tucson-area school suffered at least $1,500 in vandalism last week. The Sahuarita Police Department said Pierce Elliot, Hunter Bell, Jayden Bittion, Jesus Urias II, and Dabi Valdovinos-Blanco were arrested on charges of aggravated criminal damage, third-degree burglary, and second-degree criminal trespass.
Stinknet – A Fast Growing Problem
Stinknet (Oncosiphon pilulifer) is a noxious weed found throughout Southern Arizona including Santa Cruz County. Stinknet is a winter annual that can be identified by its green carrot-like leaves, yellow spherical flower heads, strong, pungent smell, and bronze color when dried up. A single flower head can produce hundreds of very small seeds. It easily spreads when vehicles move from one infested location to a new non-infested location where Stinknet can quickly take over.
Former Arizona grad student convicted of first-degree murder in 2022 shooting of professor
A former University of Arizona graduate student was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a hydrology professor on campus, months after he was expelled. A Pima County Superior Court jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching a verdict against Murad Dervish, 48, in the death of Thomas Meixner, who was shot 11 times near his office in October 2022. Dervish also was convicted of five other felony counts, including aggravated assault for a bullet that grazed a building manager. Dervish, who showed no emotion as the verdicts were read, is set to be sentenced on June 24. He could face life in prison.
