Nearby shooting prompts school lockdown, Madera PD says

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man was shot near an elementary school in Madera Wednesday afternoon, according to the Madera Police Department.

Officers say around 3:15 p.m. they responded to the area of South Street and Austin Avenues near George Washington Elementary School.

Due to the close proximity of the incident to the school, police say their School Resource Officers arrived in minutes and immediately placed the school on lockdown.

Upon arrival, authorities say they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near D Street and South Street. He was immediately transported to a local hospital.

Police have a suspect in custody based on witnesses and surveillance footage but say they are not releasing their information at this time.

Officers are reassuring that the shooting is an isolated incident and did not involve any students or staff at the nearby school.
