School dance halted after shots fired nearby, Madera Co. Sheriff says

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – An elementary school was placed on lockdown during a school dance after shots were fired nearby Thursday evening, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say around 6:00 p.m. they responded to a shots fired call on Midland Way and Club Drive which is directly adjacent to Berenda Elementary School.

Upon arrival, authorities say they found evidence that a shooting did occur and learned the school nearby was having a dance.

Out of caution officials placed the school under lockdown and immediately searched throughout the school for any potential threats.

After a thorough search, there was no active threat on the school campus, and was confirmed by deputies the incident did not take place there or had any correlation to the school.

No injuries were reported.

Detectives are actively investigating the scene and say preliminary investigation suggests there were likely at least four people involved in the shooting.
