Update: North Avenue road closure, sewer work delayed in Fresno for now
UPDATE: The city delayed construction scheduled for the North Avenue sewer main rehabilitation project “due to unforeseen delays in material delivery and to avoid construction-related closures during the holiday season,” the communications department told media Friday. An updated schedule will be provided at a later time. Original story: North Avenue from Cedar Avenue to Highway 99 will close to traffic for the first three weeks of November, the City of Fresno announced Thursday. The closure will be in place 24/7 for sewer main rehabilitation beginning Nov. 2 and is expected to continue through Nov. 20. Traffic will detour to Central Avenue. Additional closures will follow as construction progresses, and driver should expect delays in the area, the city said in a press release Thursday. Drivers traveling on southbound Highway 99 are recommended by the city to use Jensen or Central Avenue for destinations east of Highway 99. Drivers on northbound Highway 99 are recommended to use Central or Jensen for destinations west of Highway 99. The Cedar and North Avenue exit may still be used for destinations east of the 99. “Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes or expect delays. Schedule is pending weather or unforeseen delays,”

Councilmember calls for misconduct probe into now-dropped DUI arrest of council candidate
Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias on Thursday called for an investigation into the city attorney’s involvement in disclosing information about a council candidate’s now-cleared DUI arrest in the Tower District last weekend. The controversy relates to the handling of council candidate Naindeep Singh’s arrest on Oct. 24. A blood test cleared Singh of wrongdoing several days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug. City Attorney Andrew Janz allegedly broke the news of Singh’s arrest in a comment to a local journalist’s blog , which quoted Janz as a source. “The fact is that there’s a lot of questions on why the city attorney, who has no authority and responsibility in announcing arrests, is publicly announcing arrests ahead of the police department (and) ahead of the administration whose responsibility is the implementation of law enforcement duties in our city,” Arias said. After Arias’s comments, Janz launched accusations of his own against the councilmember. “Next week, I am calling on the city of Fresno to open an investigation into Councilmember Arias for interference in the city attorney’s legal obligation to disclose public records and potential violations of the Brown Act,” said Janz, referring to the

‘Blurring the lines.’ Drivers question anti-union tactics from Central California Food Bank
On Friday, drivers for the Central California Food Bank will decide whether they want union representation. But in the lead-up to the vote that could make history at the Fresno nonprofit, organizers and drivers say the food bank has hired a consultant, known for advising companies in California on how to avoid unionization, to discourage them from exercising their rights.

A new-to-California coffee chain is building on this busy corner in Clovis
What’s behind the construction the barricades near McDonald’s at Clovis and Shaw avenues? Construction vehicles are digging up dirt for the next new chain coffee drive-thru. It’s not a Dutch Bros, not a Starbucks, but a 7 Brew Drive Thru Coffee . It’s a drive-thru-only coffee spot at the southwest corner, built in an empty parking lot between McDonald’s and El Pollo Loco. Its Clovis location will be one of the first in California. The Arkansas-based company has been exploding with new locations across the Southwest, particularly in Texas and Arizona. It has more than 900 locations in 38 states. The Clovis location will be 910 square feet with a double drive-thru lane that can hold up to 13 cars, according to a permit approved by the Clovis Planning Commission. Employees walk out to cars to take orders and deliver drinks to keep the line moving. It will have outdoor seating, but no indoor seating. If the construction process is anything like the location in the works for Visalia , a small prefabricated building will be lifted into place by a crane . So what is 7 Brew? The company has a concept similar to Dutch Bros business model. It

Civil rights icon Dolores Huerta remembered in Fresno as ‘a force of nature'
Local leaders across Fresno County are remembering the legacy of civil rights icon and labor leader Dolores Huerta, who has deep connections to the Central Valley, in the wake of her death. For decades, Huerta championed farmworkers’ rights and worked to improve the lives and working conditions of migrant laborers. She died Wednesday at 96 in her Bakersfield home, according to the Dolores Huerta Foundation. Many Fresno area politicians turned to social media Wednesday morning, thanking Huerta for her profound impact and honoring her legacy. Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez described Huerta as a remarkable woman, pioneer, advocate and icon in a statement provided to The Bee on Wednesday. “She embodied the spirit of equality and the belief that every person deserves dignity and respect,” Chavez said. “Her life’s work transformed the lives of generations of farmworkers and their families, and her impact can be felt throughout the Central Valley and far beyond.” Huerta, who was instrumental in creating the United Farm Workers union along with Cesar Chavez, has earned numerous humanitarian awards for her accomplishments, and her April 10 birthday has been recognized officially as Dolores Huerta Day in California since 2018.
