MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 13-year old has died and another 13-year-old has been charged as an adult after an accidental shooting in Coahoma County, Mississippi.

On March 15, Coahoma County deputies responded to a call about a shooting at 449 Amber Cove in Lyon, Miss.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered the 13-year-old who had been shot once in the upper torso.

The first deputy at the scene administered CPR until an ambulance arrived and transported the victim to the Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

“My wife came to the door and said, ‘what the ambulance doing there?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know,” neighbor Thomas Brown said. “And the next thing I know, I hear a young man had got shot.

“I see the young man out here all the time, they be playing basketball at that goal there. And I said, ‘Man, where he get a gun from?’ So that was shocking, yes.”

Throughout their investigation, deputies learned that a second 13-year-old and the victim were playing with a handgun. At some point, the second juvenile accidentally pulled the trigger and shot the victim.

A family member who spoke with WREG, but asked to remain anonymous, said that the boys were best friends and describes the incident as a “terrible accident”.

The investigation also revealed that the two juveniles were the only two people inside the residence when the shooting occurred.

“We have to get rid of the guns, that’s the main thing,” Brown said. “Get rid of the guns and talk to your children. Help them understand that guns is dangerous. Once you kill somebody, that’s it. You can’t bring them back.”

The second male juvenile has been charged as an adult with manslaughter culpable negligence. He is currently in the custody of the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office.

His bond has been set at $15,000.
