MARTENSDALE — The Lynnville-Sully girls track and field team won three different types of events on Thursday.
Foreign exchange student Helle Augustinussen won the long jump and the Hawks were victorious in both a sprint relay and a distance relay during the Martensdale-St. Marys Coed Invitational.
Lynnville-Sully registered 14 top-three finishes in all and that led the Hawks to a runner-up finish in the team race. The Hawks trailed meet champion Interstate 35 by just three points and Colfax-Mingo was sixth in the seven-team field.
Interstate 35 won the meet with 125 points, while L-S (122), Des Moines Christian (91), Nodaway Valley (80), host Martensdale-St. Marys (75), Colfax-Mingo (66) and Wayne (20) completed the seven-team field.
“The Hawks came out ready to compete,” L-S head girls track and field coach Kevin Johnson said. “They continue to develop as individuals and as a team. It’s a great group, and they work really hard. It was a good night overall.”
Colfax-Mingo scored 66 points without a victory. Its shuttle hurdle relay team was second and Lexie Aller also grabbed a silver medal in the shot put.
Lynnville-Sully’s lone individual victory came from Augustinussen. She won the long jump with a career-best leap of 15 feet, 2 3/4 inches.
The Hawks won the 4x800-meter relay with a season-best time of 10 minutes, 51.18 seconds with Emma Parkinson, Kate Harthoorn, Olivia Norrish and Peyton Sharp.
The 4x200 relay team of Carsyn McFarland, Morgan Hay, Morgan Jones and Tatum Huyser also won with a time of 1:58.05.
That same foursome took second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 52.86 seconds.
The distance medley relay team placed second, too. That group featured Jones, Huyser, Brilynn Tice and Sharp and they finished in 4:59.18.
L-S had five individual runner-up finishes. Augustinussen (career-best 18.57) was second in the 100 hurdles, Harthoorn (2:40.82) and Norrish (career-best 2:41.05) went 2-3 in the 800, Sharp (5:44.05) finished second in the 1,500, Norrish (12:49.01) was the runner-up in the 3,000 and Huyser (4-10) took second in the high jump.
The Hawks scored double points in the 100, 200, 800, 1,500 and the discus.
McFarland (13.51) and Natalie Roberts (career-best 14.42) were 3-5 in the 100, Tice (career-best 28.8) and Augustinussen (30.67) were 3-6 in the 200 and Parkinson finished fifth in the 1,500 in 5:52.02 and was sixth in the 800 in a career-best 2:54.97.
Laura Fikse finished fifth in the discus with a career-best toss of 69-9 and Abby Roberts was sixth with a throw of 66-4.
The Hawks opened their night on the track with a third-place finish in the sprint medley relay. The team of Hay, Natalie Roberts, Addison Collum and Tice finished the race in 2:08.41.
“It was another cool night, but the Hawks did a lot of good things,” Johnson said. “It was a good night as the team continues to grow and develop as individuals and as a team.”
Colfax-Mingo was led by Aller in the shot put as she was second with a career-best throw of 30-7 3/4. Emma Cook gave the Tigerhawks double points with a sixth-place finish and a throw of 27-5 1/4.
The Tigerhawks’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Lily Webster, Evalyn Anderson, Trinity Smith and Arlo Steck finished second in 1:18.99.
Smith scored a pair of top-four finishes as she was third in the 400 hurdles in a career-best 1:17.15 and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14-3 1/4.
Katelyn Steenhoek and Grace Hunsberger both cleared 4-6 in the high jump. Steenhoek was third and Hunsberger placed fourth in the event.
The final top-five individual finishes came from Cadence Linn, Dakota Allen and Addie Schroeder.
Linn was fourth in the 100 with a career-best 14.39, Allen placed fourth in the 100 hurdles in a career-best 18.89 and Schroeder took fourth in the 1,500 with a time of 5:49.46.
