L-S boys finish fifth, C-M eighth at Martensdale-St. Marys

MARTENSDALE — The Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo boys track and field teams were held out of the win column at the Martensdale-St. Marys Coed Invitational on Thursday.

But the Hawks grabbed a pair of silver and bronze medals and scored 50 points in fifth place.

Xavier Woods had the Tigerhawks’ only top-six finishes as Colfax-Mingo scored 19 points in eighth.

Madrid won the meet title with 174.5 points. The rest of the top five included Oakland Riverside (112), Pleasantville (89) and Interstate 35 (76.5). Host Martensdale-St. Marys (34) and Nodaway Valley (29) rounded out the eight-team field.

Jack Bowlin led the Hawks with a runner-up finish in the long jump. He grabbed the silver medal with a career-best leap of 20 feet, 6 inches.

The distance medley relay team also was second. The foursome of Corder Noun Harder, Isaac Ver Ploeg, Bowlin and Hendrick Lowry finished the race in 3 minutes, 59.75 seconds.

Noun Harder (11.54) was third in the 100-meter dash and the sprint medley relay team of Noun Harder, Dawson James, Ver Ploeg and Lowry took third in 1:43.06.

James (42-11) and Terran Gosselink (5-8) each placed fourth in the shot put and high jump, respectively.

Woods placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.59. He also took third in the high jump with a leap of 5-8 and took sixth in the 400 with a career-best time of 55.97.
