Volunteers needed for Lutsen 99er bike race
The 14th annual Lutsen 99er bike race will take place on Saturday, Jun. 29. Two of the race organizers, Emily Jeffers and Signe Larson, spoke to WTIP about the event. There are four adult races, the 99er, 69er, 45er, and the 29er, plus a race just for kids. All of the race courses are loops, starting and ending at the Superior National Golf Course. The longest race, the 99er, takes riders on a 102 mile loop full of hills. According to Jeffers, the lead cyclists of the 99er generally take about 5 hours and 45 minutes to complete the course.
Renovation work begins at Birchwood Apartments
The first stage of the rehabilitation of the Birchwood Apartments in Grand Marais has officially begun. The building falls under the USDA’s Rural Development program. In Jan. 2023, the USDA conducted an inspection of the building and found extensive water damage. Chronic issues with leaking pipes led to permanent damage to ceilings, walls, and floors in some units.

ADA-compliant kayak dock installed at Grand Marais Recreation Park boat landing
On the morning of May 9, the Grand Marais Recreation Park staff finished installing the new BoardSafe adaptive kayak dock in the Grand Marais harbor. The adaptive kayak dock is one of the final components that the City of Grand Marais included within the Parkside Public Access Plan for the recreation park.
