KTRE 9 News in Lufkin is reporting that Lufkin ISD Superintendent Lynn Torres has announced that money for special needs school playground equipment has been stolen by an employee of a company that was supposed to do the job.

According to the report, the school district had approximately $357,000.00 in federal block grant funds and paid approximately $164,000.00 to contract with PTI Sports and Recreation Company out of Goodrich to install the playground equipment at two elementary schools.

However, it’s reported that an employee of the company embezzled the money, and the superintendent said it’s believed that the suspect may have fled the United States.

Now, the superintendent has told the Lufkin School Board that legal action should be pursued against the company for breach of contract in an effort to recover the money. Torres also said it’s expected that the company will most likely file for bankruptcy in an effort to protect themselves.
