Something New Is Finally Coming To Long Empty Building In Lubbock

I have racked my brains (and worn out Google) trying to figure out if the building at 34th & Slide has been anything since it was an Eckerd's Pharmacy a million years ago. I haven't been able to come up with anything. It's entirely possible it has been something since, but it hasn't been anything in quite some time. It's an attractive building in a very visible location so it has mystified me that it stayed empty so long.

Finally back tracked the history. It was built as an Eckerds after they tore down L&H Drug. Then in April 2004 Eckerd was broken up and sold to CVS. CVS purchased the land across the street in 2007 and built a whole new store and moved. Still don’t understand the new build across the street from the already existing store.

Luckily this building will finally have some new life with a business that I think Central West Lubbock can really use. It's going to be Lubbock's second location of Pets Supplies Plus, according to signage I was able to snap a picture of yesterday.

Pets Supplies Plus is a franchise pet store that carries a wide variety of pet foods, accessories, and other essentials. Many locations have live animals like birds, fish, and reptiles for sale and do-it-yourself washing stations for dogs.

The first location of Pets Supplies Plus (5715 82nd Street) took over a former women-only gym a little over a year ago, as we previously reported. I am glad they are opting to take over existing construction in lieu of creating yet another new building in very south or very west Lubbock. Central Lubbock matters and deserves better than a bunch of empty (but perfectly great) buildings.
