TEXAS TECH SPORTS ROUNDUP: Texas Tech falls to No. 10 Texas in finale, swept in Big 12 series

By Staff Reports
Texas Tech’s Peyton Blythe (23) swings at the ball in the first inning of a nonconference game against North Dakota on Thursday, March 2, 2023 during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic held at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas.

AUSTIN — Peyton Blythe drove in a pair of runs, including a solo home run in the sixth, but Texas Tech needed more offense as it suffered a 8-3 road loss to No. 10 Texas in the finale of a three-game Big 12 Conference series.

With the defeat, the Red Raiders (26-11, 0-3) have dropped their last three contests and are in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season after falling to the Longhorns (30-5-1, 3-0).

UT got off to a quick start, plating three runs in the home half to take a 3-0 advantage.

Blythe, who finished 2-for-3 on the day, cut the deficit to two runs following a single to the left field that allowed Gabby Rawls to score and put the Red Raiders behind 3-1.

The Longhorns countered with another crooked inning, pushing across two runs — highlighted by a Katie Cimusz two-run home run — to push its advantage to 5-1.

Texas Tech was unable to muster much offense the rest of the way, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth, en route to the loss.

UT starting pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez (10-1) earned the victory after scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs through six innings of work.

The Red Raiders are scheduled to take on Iowa State for a three-game conference set, beginning with a 6 p.m. Friday contest at Rocky Johnson Field. The two teams will play at 1 p.m. Saturday before concluding the series at noon Sunday.

Men’s golf

The No. 3 ranked Red Raiders return from a three week hiatus this week when they compete in the Valspar Collegiate hosted by the University of Houston at Floridian National. The 16-team field features eight top-20 teams, six top-10 teams and three members of the top-five in the most recent GolfStat rankings. The action begins on Monday with 36 holes before wrapping up Tuesday with the third and final round. Tech is paired with No. 2 Arizona State, No. 4 UNC and host Houston. The Red Raiders will tee off from holes 1-4 for the 7 a.m. Monday shotgun start.

Women’s Tennis

After recording five singles wins on the day, the No. 43 Lady Raiders earned their second Big 12 victory of the season by downing Kansas State 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.

Texas Tech (12-6, 2-2 Big 12) won its 12th doubles point of the season after picking up wins on courts two and three over the Wildcats (2-16, 0-6 Big 12). With K-State forfeiting at court three, the Lady Raiders only needed one more win to claim the point.

That victory would come at court two as the tandem of Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea clinched doubles for Tech with a 6-4 win against Florentine Dekkers and Farhat Quamar.

Texas Tech continues conference play with two home matches next week against Baylor on Friday and Texas on Sunday.
