PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Lower Merion police are trying to identify the suspect in a carjacking who they say posed as a solar power solicitor.

Authorities say the unnamed victim arrived home in Penn Wynne, Montgomery County, around 5 p.m. Monday. When he got out of his car, they say, the suspect approached him, making conversation about solar power.

When the victim declined, the suspect pulled a gun on him and forced him into the driver’s seat of his own car. The suspect allegedly ordered him to drive to a local bank and withdraw cash before he directed him to drive into Philadelphia.

The victim was able to escape from the moving vehicle on the 1800 block of North Broad Street. He ran up onto the sidewalk as his car hit another vehicle. The suspect fled on foot toward Norris Street.

Police describe the suspect as 20 to 30 years old and about 6 feet tall. At the time of the carjacking, he was wearing dark clothing, and his face was obscured by a surgical mask.

Lower Merion authorities warn the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous and urge anyone with information to reach out with tips.
