90+ temperatures are heading toward the Louisville area. Here's when to expect them

The dog days of summer may arrive ahead of schedule in Louisville with temperatures potentially reaching into the low 90s before the weekend.

Starting Wednesday, a system of high air pressure will set the stage for warmer weather, said Evan Webb, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. High pressure will stick around for several days, putting Louisville under a dome of heat.

"There's some potential for heat and humidity to build late this week, reaching it's strongest intensity this weekend," Webb said.

The warming trend could continue into next week. The Climate Prediction Center forecast a 70-80% chance for temperatures above normal to persist in Indiana and most of Kentucky from June 17-23. Webb said the average June temperature for Louisville reaches into the mid-to-upper 80s and falls into the upper 60s at night.

Though temperatures could be elevated in Louisville this weekend, it is possible the humidity levels will not be as "oppressive" as the warm temperatures, Webb said, but frequent breaks in shade and hydration is still recommended for anyone who has to travel outdoors.

"You'll want to make sure you check the backseat for children and pets before leaving your vehicle," Webb said. "You should never leave them unattended when the weather is as warm as it will be."
