Louisville woman receives winning lottery email while at work

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — A Louisville woman won $1 million playing the May 31 Powerball.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought a Powerball ticket online using the Kentucky Lottery’s website.

“I’ve played for years.”  She told lottery officials she won $200 two months ago and especially likes purchasing her tickets online. “I can go on and do it and it takes only a couple of minutes.”

After buying the ticket she went on her life as normal until one day at work.

While at work, she was looking through her emails when she came across one from the Kentucky Lottery telling her she had won $1 million.

“I literally was like no way,” she said. “I am just floored.”

She said she stepped outside to call her husband and asked, “Are you sitting down?”

“I think I just won a million dollars,” she said.  He told her, “Oh, come on.  What?”  “I really think I did,” she told him.

“It could’ve been a scam,” she said.  The couple questioned whether the email was a scam but after further investigation, felt confident she was a winner.

They received the reassurance they needed after showing up at Kentucky Lottery headquarters Thursday afternoon to claim the ticket.

“Lightning has struck, very good lightning,” her husband told lottery officials.

The woman walked away with a check for $715,000 after taxes.

“This gives us so much freedom to do some things we want to do,” she said.  For example, the couple would like to do some things around the house and travel.

“I want it [winning] to be something that is an asset that we have.  It’s not something I’m going to blow,” she added.
