Former Dodgers Pitcher Misses the Dodger Stadium Mound for One Simple Reason

Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Wood, who is currently with the Oakland Athletics, has pitched in every Major League Baseball stadium except Comerica Park in Detroit. However, he is familiar with it.

“Detroit is probably one of the worst, fattest mounds,” he said. “You don’t even have to get on it. You can just see it.”

Wood has been vocal on social media this season about how the mounds vary from team to team. He doesn’t understand why each ballpark is different instead of the league having a standard to make them all the same.

“I’ve been talking about it for years. You would think one company would just produce a mound that’s the exact same across all of baseball and then all the grounds crew would have to do would basically be to take care of the rubber and the landing holes,” Wood told The Athletic. “But I wouldn’t say there’s one mound that’s the same as the next, generally speaking.”

Wood was asked to provide his top five mounds he has pitched on and his answer was a little surprising. Dodger Stadium, Petco Park and Yankee Stadium are all tied for the best in the league by his standards.

“Those three, for sure, are some of the best,” Wood said. “The clay they use, the way the mound stays together, you don’t get big holes in the rubber or on the landing spot, just the way that it’s taken care of by the grounds crew.”
