During Game 3 of the first-round series between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, D’Angelo Russell was spotted scrolling through his phone while his team was in a huddle. The viral video went around the internet on Thursday after the Lakers dropped to 0-3 against the Nuggets.
A horrible look for D’Lo
There’s no sugarcoating the fact that this video looks very poorly on Russell . Not only does it reflect his lack of professionalism and integrity, but it also looks even worse, knowing that he scored 0 points on 0-6 shooting. In a contest where the Lakers really needed their point guard to step up, DLo was nowhere to be found and instead turned out to be the punching bag for NBA Twitter once again.
It seems the crowd at Crypto.com Arena also felt the same way fans on Twitter did towards Russell as they booed him while he was struggling throughout the night. It’s hard to blame Lakers fans for feeling this way, considering that this is the second series in a row against Denver where Russell disappeared.
The complicated relationship between DLo and the Lakers
The thing about DLo’s current 2-year and $36 million contract with the Lakers is that he has an impending player option in the offseason. That means the 11-year point guard can either choose to stay in L.A. for another year or become a free agent.
During the regular season, where Russell averaged 18.0 points and 6.3 assists on a career-high 41.5% three-point shooting, it seemed like he was poised to garner a bigger contract at that time. But since the playoffs started, DLo’s stock has plummeted as he proved once again that he might just be an 82-game player instead of a playoff riser.
On top of how he behaved in Game 3, this might have repercussions on his career moving forward.
