LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is scheduled to accept a Woman of the Year Award from the California Legislative Women's Caucus in Sacramento today.

The Woman of the Year Award was founded in 1987 by then-Assemblywomen Bev Hansen, R-Santa Rosa, and Sally Tanner, D-El Monte, who noticed that the Legislature had no events planned in connection with Women's History Month, which is March.

In celebration of the contributions to society made by remarkable women throughout California, Hansen and Tanner began the tradition of each legislator inviting one woman from each Senate and Assembly district to come to the Capitol and be honored for their accomplishments.

The Legislative Women's Caucus bills itself as representing and advocating on behalf of the diverse interests of women, children and families throughout California and seeks to increase participation and representation of women in state government.

Bass will also meet with members of the Los Angeles delegation to the Legislature while in Sacramento, a spokesman told City News Service.

Bass is scheduled to return to Los Angeles Monday night.
