TCU baseball snaps 5-game skid with walk-off win over Lester Prairie
Sometimes, seven innings isn't enough to determine a winner and Monday night's conference showdown with Lester Prairie proved to be one such game for the Tri-City United baseball team. With Keegan O'Meara at second and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Dylan Fink sent a line drive into right field which brough O'Meara safely home for the walk off victory. The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Titans, improving the team's record to 2-5 (2-4 MRC) on the season. ...

Using a probing rod, Fred Simon searched around his great-grandmother’s headstone in the Czech Republic. All of a sudden, he hit something. About a foot below the surface, Simon had found the footstone of his great-grandfather, Josef Polacek. This would be the first of several discoveries about Czech heritage by Simon, who became president of the Czech Heritage Club on Wednesday and presented to a roomful of people at the Rice County Historical Society on Thursday. ...

Volunteer homemaker and driver service celebrates 20 years in 2024
When Lisa Stevens, a retired forklift driver at Post Consumer Brands, signed up to be a homemaker for Aging Services for Communities a year ago, she had no idea how much the experience would deepen her insight into the needs of other less fortunate community members. Stevens, who lives in Dundas, said she contacted Aging Services, headquartered in Montgomery, after seeing an ad on Facebook looking for people who wanted to make “extra money and a difference for the aging and disabled.” ...
Sexual assault, burglary, domestic violence spike amid officer shortage
Update: This article has been updated to contain the accurate data for years 2021 and 2023. Lonsdale Police Chief Jason Schmitz sarcastically gave “thanks to the Defund the Police Movement” for the recent shortage of new police officers during his annual report to the Lonsdale City Council Thursday evening. Schmitz’s department has been looking to fill a full-time position for months and, since September, his report said the department has...
Rice County heads toward limiting public marijuana use
Restrictions on marijuana use appear to be likely coming to parks and other public spaces in Rice County. Rice County commissioners said Tuesday they were in favor of enacting some public use restrictions on county property — primarily outside of city limits but also on the Rice County Fairgrounds in Faribault. County Environmental Services Director Julie Runkel asked commissioners if they wished to limit where the now-legalized drug can be...
Krautkremer throws no-hitter while O'Malley provides big hits in TCU victory
After having Tuesday night’s season opener canceled due to weather, the Tri-City United baseball team got the opportunity to open its season Thursday night at Lester Prairie. The Titans were clearly chomping at the bit to get started, as they cruised to a 13-0 victory on the arm of Max Krautkremer, who threw a five-inning no hitter with 12 strikeouts, as well as a four-RBI day from Parker O’Malley. TCU...

Storm spotters play crucial role in severe weather
A radar can only see so much. As National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen Warning Coordinator and Meteorologist Todd Krause explained, it takes reliable and alert storm spotters to know what’s really going on. Krause was speaking during a storm-spotter training for Rice County Skywarn Thursday night at Buckham West Library in Faribault. “We’re looking at...
Subdued winter contributed to statewide rise in traffic fatalities, but none to date in Rice County
Even with roads lacking regular coatings of ice and snow this unusually warm and snowless winter, traffic fatalities paradoxically increased across Minnesota roadways. As of March 25, 68 people had lost their lives on Minnesota roads, compared to just 43 at this time last year. The Department of Public Safety attributed the spike to drivers lulled into a sense of complacency by the lack of inclement weather. With the roads...

Discussion begins for stricter tobacco ordinance in Rice County
Banning flavored vapes and menthol cigarettes sales are among the proposed updates to Rice County’s two-decade-old tobacco ordinance. But the tangible impact it would have is minimal. Tuesday’s Rice County Board of Commissioners work session began with a 45-minute discussion about a number of updates to the county’s current tobacco ordinance, which was enacted in 1998. While the proposals excited at least three local health advocates who spoke at the meeting, it’s not likely to have much effect unless the municipalities follow suit. ...
