Sheriff’s Deputies Fatally Shoot Suspect Armed With Knife in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif., Mar. 20 (KNN) — The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department was involved in a fatal shooting of a suspect armed with a knife who had crashed into a deputy’s patrol unit at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Downey Avenue in the city of Long Beach Tuesday night.
The incident is currently an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that deputies from the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station responded to the 15900 block of Indiana Avenue in Paramount regarding a retraining order violation call, according to the LASD.
Upon arrival, deputies spoke to the victim and observed the suspect drive past the residence but lost sight of him.
“While continuing to search for the suspect, deputies observed him driving east on Artesia Boulevard, approaching Downey Avenue. The suspect was stopped in his vehicle at the intersection. As a deputy pulled in behind the suspect vehicle, the suspect placed his vehicle in reverse, deliberately accelerated, and crashed into the front end of the patrol unit,” stated the LASD.
The suspect then exited his vehicle armed with a knife and charged at deputy personnel resulting in a deputy-involved shooting at approximately 9:18 p.m., according to the LASD.
The LASD reported that here were two shooter deputies, and the suspect was described as a Hispanic male, 35-40 years of age.
The suspect was treated at the scene by responding Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel and ultimately pronounced deceased.
A knife was recovered at the scene, according to the LASD.
One deputy was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries sustained during the collision, reported the LASD. No one else was injured during this incident.
