The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a $10,000 reward Tuesday for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible for the shooting death of 12-year-old Eric Brown in Central Long Beach last month.

Brown died after being shot on the night of May 9 while walking near his home with friends, one of whom, a 14-year-old girl, was also hit by the gunfire but survived.

With no suspect in custody, the Long Beach City Council voted at its May 23 meeting to begin working with the county to issue a reward. No arrest has been made since the shooting last month.

The council voted to create a reward of no less than $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of Brown’s killer. It’s unclear where the rest of the funding will come from.

Long Beach could direct general fund dollars toward the reward, or funds from an individual City Council district account could be donated toward the reward.

Councilmember Suely Saro, who represents the area where Brown was murdered and who requested the city work with the county on a reward, said in a text message Tuesday that the city would cover the remaining $15,000, and the council’s vote directed the city manager to identify funds to “to be available by the end of the year.”
