Things to do in Long Beach this weekend including… film screenings, art in the park and Broadway

This weekend is the time to check out some unique live shows you’re unlikely to see in Long Beach again anytime soon. From a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack tribute band to a sci-fi tiki show to a Broadway musical experience featuring some of New York’s most celebrated voices, getting out to check out a show this weekend is a very good idea.

For our creatives out there, there is the return of a popular art event that takes place in Bluff Park. And for our cinephiles, the Art Theatre is showing two screenings of the Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” this weekend only.

ART IN THE PARK (Saturday)

Downtown’s Bluff Park is a public space always bustling with activity, from yoga sessions to drum circles to even the occasional demonstration . One popular event at the park that invites artists of any stripe to get outside and create together returns Saturday, March 25.

The daylong Art in the Park event, which begins at 2 p.m., will have live music, art demonstrations and vendors to shop from. Artist Samantha Mousser will also be attending as the event’s featured artist of the month.

THE CINERAMAS AT ALEX’S BAR (Saturday)

The Cineramas, a Long Beach tribute group that performs songs from soundtracks to Quentin Tarantino films, returns to Alex’s Bar Saturday, March 25.

Expect the whole gamut of music from Tarantino’s most popular movies, including “Pulp Fiction,” “Kill Bill,” “Django Unchained” and more, performed by the dynamic 10-piece group. Opening the show are bands Tastee Nuggz and Gayc/DC , the world’s first and only all-gay AC/DC tribute band.

Tickets cost $19.32 (fees included) and may be purchased online here . Doors open at 8 p.m.

UPCYCLING WORKSHOP AT RANCHO LOS ALAMITOS (Saturday)

In this workshop at Rancho Los Alamitos on Saturday, March 25, visitors will learn how to upcycle—also known as creatively reusing—old socks into a pot holder.

Led by the ranch’s public programs coordinator, Margarete Villalobos, guests will take a tour of the Rancho Los Alamitos historic kitchen with a behind-the-scenes look into household sustainability practices. Then visitors will learn how to reuse worn socks to create a new functional pot holder through weaving. The event is designed to leave guests feeling inspired by other ways they can upcycle other functional, everyday items in their homes before throwing them away.

All supplies will be included, but participants are encouraged to bring a pair of their own well-worn socks. The workshop is open to individuals as young as 8. Tickets cost $25. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

LONG BEACH SYMPHONY PRESENTS “BRAVO! BROADWAY” (Saturday)

The Long Beach Symphony is giving Long Beach a taste of Broadway musicals with its POPS! concert: “Bravo! Broadway” on Saturday, March 25.

New York Broadway stars including Scarlett Strallen (who plays Gwendolyn in Broadway’s “Travesties”), LaKisha Jones (an American Idol finalist who performs in Broadway’s “The Color Purple”) and Hugh Panaro (who’s played the title role in Broadway’s “The Phantom of the Opera” over 2,000 times), will perform dozens of songs from some of the most celebrated Broadway musicals of all time.

Led by Grammy-award-winning conductor James K. Bass, guests can expect to hear songs from “Funny Girl”, “Sweeney Todd,” “Lion King,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Hello Dolly,” “Rent,” “Westside Story” and many more.

“ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED” FILM SCREENING (Saturday & Sunday)

The Art Theatre on Retro Row will be showing two screenings of the 2022 Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” a film about photographer Nan Golden and her activism against the Sackler family, owners and founders of the pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma that manufactured OxyContin and was largely responsible for the opioid epidemic in the U.S.

Both showings for the film on Saturday and Sunday, March 25-26, are at 11 a.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults. Click here to purchase.

The Art Theatre of Long Beach is at 2025 E. Fourth St.

SCI-FI TIKI NIGHT (Sunday)

With live music, cyberpunk costumes, sci-fi decor, trivia and even a giant robot, Sunday night at Downtown tiki lounge Secret Island will transplant visitors to a tiki lounge some 100 (maybe 200) years into the future with its “Sci-Fi Tiki Night” on March 26.

Local psychobilly and synthwave band Eclectotron will headline the show, fit with all the energy, theatrics and neon-armor-clad costumes that easily mark the band as one of the most unique concert experiences in the city. Also on the lineup is Los Angeles-based cyberpunk DJ Grindhaus Selektor .

Tickets for the show are $5 and may be purchased at the door. The event opens at 6 p.m.

LONG BEACH CAMERATA SINGERS LEND VOICES THIS SUNDAY TO “SPAIN AND THE NEW WORLD” (Sunday)

The Long Beach Camerata Singers continue their 57th concert season with “Spain and the New World,” a performance focused on musical compositions by 16th and 17th-century Spanish Baroque composers and the evolution of that sound.

Led by 2021 Grammy-award-winning Artistic Director Dr. James K. Bass, the show on Sunday, March 26, at Los Altos United Methodist Church, will be performed by Camerata’s all-professional singing group, the Catalyst Chamber Ensemble.

The concert will take place at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at the Los Altos United Methodist Church, 5950 E. Willow St. Tickets, starting at $40 each, are available now.
