Long Beach shattered the previous March 21 rain record on Tuesday, when 1.53 inches of precipitation was reported at Long Beach Airport.
The previous record was set in 1983, when 0.82 inches of rain was reported.
The National Weather Service said Tuesday’s storm, which came on the first full day of spring following the state’s extraordinary winter, was a Pacific low-pressure system interacting with California’s 12th atmospheric river since late December.
The NWS is forecasting another tenth to a quarter inch of rain today. Long Beach will remain under a flood watch until 5 p.m. today and a high surf advisory until 5 a.m. Thursday.
Forecasters predict a 20% chance of rain tonight, and the weather is expected to be clear and mostly sunny for the rest of the week, though the NWS’ current forecast shows a slight chance of rain on Tuesday.
