Grover C. Bishop, 79, Logansport, passed peacefully at home on May 29, 2023.
Born November 12, 1943, in Abilene, Texas, he was the son of the late Dr. Ralph and Helen (Castor) Bishop. Following Ralph’s service in the US Army during WWII, the family settled in Winamac, Indiana.
Grover graduated from Indiana University in 1966, where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and a drummer in the Marching Hundred.
Grover was a Captain in the US Army (1967-1971) and with the 69th Armor Division in Vietnam in 1968. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. in ground operations against hostile forces in the Republic of Vietnam during the period from February 1968 to February 1969.
On August 8, 1970, Grover married Shirley (Boone) Bishop, who survives. The couple moved to Logansport where he was the manager of his uncle’s business, Staggs Tire, until his retirement in 2006 after serving 36 years in retail and commercial tire sales. Following his retirement, he worked part-time at Arone Hardware.
During his years in Logansport, Grover served the community in a variety of roles including as a member of the Cass County Council for 11 years, President of the Grissom Community Council and a member of the Cass County Council on Aging. He was an Elder and choir member at Calvary Presbyterian Church.
For over 40 years, Grover dedicated most every Monday night making a difference in the lives of countless members of Troop 2 Sagamore Council, Boy Scouts of America. He served in several capacities as Webelo leader, Cubmaster, and Assistant Scoutmaster. Grover was best known for the role he played as the merit badge supervisor for the most difficult badge to earn – that of Personal Management. For his dedication, he was awarded the Silver Beaver, the Chief Logan Award of Merit and the Wood Badge beads.
Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing and enjoying nature. Grover was a past president of the Logansport Bass Hustlers and sponsored many fishing programs for local youth.
He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Shirley (Boone) Bishop, their three children Jennifer (Mike) Albright (Carmel), Anita (Wade) Ison (Carmel), and David Bishop (Kokomo), as well as four grandchildren, Alec and Abby Albright and Sophia and Elise Ison. Also surviving are his two sisters, Becky (Bob) Duncan (Pittsboro) and Nancy Ebert (Austin, Texas).
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 – 4 p.m. Friday, June 16 in Fisher Funeral Chapel.
Full military honors will be conducted at 4 p.m. in the funeral chapel followed by a memorial service celebrating Grover’s life. Rev. Daniel Lutes will officiate at the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church or Boy Scouts of America.
