Logan's Crook signs with IUK women's golf

Mar. 23—Logansport senior Chloe Crook held her signing ceremony to play golf at IUK recently.

Crook was part of a Berries girls golf team that won NCC and sectional titles and was ranked top 20 in the state in recent years. She said that experience helped give her the motivation to play college golf.

"After playing with my teammates for so long, it made me really love golf even more and I'm ready to get better and see how I do playing against other college golfers," she said. "It was such an experience to be able to accomplish these things with my teammates. With my aunt being a part of the last team that won a sectional, that was also cool because it obviously meant a lot."

Crook's aunt is Kasia Bannon Minnick, who tragically died of cancer at age 40 in 2015.

"She's the reason I got into golf," Crook said.

The Berries had their best team this year since Bannon Minnick's senior season in 1992, when she placed third at the State Finals as an individual and the Berries placed 10th as a team.

This year's Berries team was led by the "Fab Four" seniors — Crook, Myleigh Moon, Reiss Weaver and Kendra Sutton — and sophomore Sophia Kay.

"Our team had a lot of fun and these teammates made it such a fun year," Crook said. "Abby as the coach makes it so much fun. We felt such a strong bond which made it so much more fun to go out and play as a family instead of just a team."

Logansport coach Abby Lundy said she's happy that Crook has chosen to continue her golf career at the next level.

"I'm really excited. This is my first after-the-season signing. Caroline Boyd now is playing at Trine, she transferred up to Trine and is playing on the team. But as far as my first signing goes, Chloe is my first, and it's really exciting," Lundy said. "Honestly the four seniors that I graduated this year could have all played somewhere. But it was just different choices of where they were going to go collegiately. Myleigh Moon's signing will come up here pretty soon as well in April.

"But it's just exciting. [Crook] wants to become a teacher and IUK is just a really good fit for her. With them developing their programs now in all sorts of sports over there, it's been really cool to be able to have that option."

Crook also played basketball at LHS. She averaged 4 ppg, 3 rpg and 2 apg for a Berries team that went 14-10, which was their best season since 2014. It was a program that improved from five wins her sophomore year, to eight last year and then 14 this year.

"We did a lot better than we have in past seasons," Crook said. "Our team really wanted to get better so we did. We got to the sectional final [against Harrison], we played hard, we stuck with them for awhile and then we got gassed. But we had a lot of fun, made a lot of memories with this team."

Crook also plays tennis at LHS and plans to return to her No. 1 doubles spot this spring, although her doubles partner Laney Pearson has moved to Florida so she'll need to find a new doubles partner.

Crook plans to study childhood education and business at IUK and is considering becoming a second grade or third grade teacher.
