LOGAN – In response to shooting victims across the nation, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church has announced plans to host a solemn gun violence vigil and Service of Lament on Saturday, June 3 at 1 p.m. The congregation aims to mourn and honor victims of gun violence while shedding light on the urgent need for preventive measures and activism against gun violence.
The vigil, which will take place at the church located at 930 North 400 West in Logan, promises to be a gathering of unity and remembrance to pay respects to those who have tragically lost their lives to gun violence in the country. The event will also serve as an opportunity to reflect upon the nation’s complex relationship with firearms and explore ways to address the issue.
In addition to mourning and honoring the victims, the church intends to offer insights and information on preventing gun violence. Attendees will have the chance to learn about effective strategies for raising awareness and advocating for change in their communities. The timing of the vigil aligns with the “Wear Orange” event organized by Everytown for Gun Safety, an influential movement dedicated to promoting gun safety measures. The inspiration for “Wear Orange” stems from a tragic incident that occurred in late January 2013 when Hadiya Pendleton, a young girl, lost her life to gun violence on a Chicago playground. In her memory, Hadiya’s childhood friends initiated the practice of wearing orange, akin to the protective gear worn by hunters in the woods, symbolizing their commitment to protecting lives. Since then, “Wear Orange” has become a national observance, held annually on the first Friday of June and throughout the following weekend.
As a gesture of solidarity and commitment to gun safety, the organizers strongly encourage attendees of the vigil to wear something orange. The vibrant color serves as a visual statement, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding lives and promoting responsible firearm ownership.
Depending on weather conditions, the vigil may be held outdoors, amplifying the sense of community and togetherness as participants stand united against gun violence.
