LOGAN — A 25-year-old Ogden man has accepted a plea deal in the criminal case that he allegedly threatened to kill a woman and hold her against her will at a Logan Airbnb in January 2021. Miguel Trinidad Tovar has been in the Cache County Jail since US Marshals arrested him in Murray in November 2022.
Tovar appeared for a final pretrial conference Monday afternoon in 1st District Court. He pleaded “no contest” to stalking, aggravated assault, domestic violence and unlawful detention, all third-degree felonies.
The plea meant he conceded the alleged charges occurred without admitting guilt or offering a defense. It is still viewed as a guilty plea in court.
According to prosecutors, the crimes were reported on Jan. 9, 2021, while Tovar and the victim were staying at an Airbnb in Logan. The woman told police how Tovar became upset with her and brandished a gun, claiming she had cheated on him. He pointed it at her and threatened to kill her.
She tried to calm him down until he fell asleep but later woke up and threatened her with another firearm, saying he was going to kill her and others.
No shot were ever fired.
A lengthy investigation followed, as police gathered further evidence. The case was later turned over to the Cache County Attorney’s office.
Tovar spoke only briefly during Monday’s court hearing. He waived his right to a fair trial and asked for his four-day jury trial, scheduled to begin June 14, to be cancelled.
Judge Spencer Walsh ordered Tovar to remain in jail and complete a presentence report about his criminal history. He scheduled sentencing for July 3, when the defendant could face up to five years in prison.
