TAHLEQUAH – Hailed as a champion for workers’ rights, late Cherokee Nation Election Commissioner Randy Campbell is remembered by many for a lifetime of service to others. “Randy Campbell spent his life caring about people who otherwise might live in the shadows,” Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said of his longtime friend. “He spent his life caring about people who did not have a voice.”
Cherokee Nation’s first-ever Watercress Fest embraces culture, conservation, community
ROSE – As spring blooms in the Cherokee Nation, a new event promoting natural resources and conservation blossoms as well. Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism hosted its first-ever Watercress Fest at the Saline Courthouse Museum on April 20, a one-day festival including cultural games, artist demonstrations, live music, food and water and land preservation presentations.

Cherokee Nation planning crisis shelter to tackle homelessness
TAHLEQUAH – To help address homelessness, the Cherokee Nation is developing plans to construct a crisis shelter in its capital city of Tahlequah. Under the administration’s proposal – approved April 15 by the Tribal Council – the tribe would potentially help pay for expansion of the city’s Anthis-Brennan Family Sports Complex in exchange for the 25-acre Phoenix Park, where a shelter would be constructed. The shelter would be open to men, women and families with a priority on Cherokee citizens.
Jacobs is parade marshal
Frontier Days is fast approaching. The Frontier Days committee has announced that Ron Jacobs will be serving as this year’s parade grand marshal. Jacobs was born in Shady Dale in 1938. He attended school at Meadowbrook, where he graduated in 1956. After graduating from both Murray State College in Tishomingo and Southeastern Oklahoma State University (then College) with an education degree, Jacobs went on to teach for almost 30 years.
