Music in the Shadows: Young artists perform at Pasadena Mausoleum
By Suzanne York,
1 days agoOn Sunday, November 1, the Pasadena Mausoleum will provide an atmospheric setting for Music in the Shadows, a candlelit concert presented by Melodia Mariposa. The program brings together the acclaimed Zelter String Quartet and mezzo-soprano Meagan Martin for Claude Debussy’s evocative String Quartet in G minor, dramatic works by Franz Schubert and George Frideric Handel, and selections from classic Halloween films.
The unusual combination promises an evening of musical contrasts, from the shifting moods of Debussy to the dramatic power of opera and the familiar suspense of film music. The performers, though young, have already established impressive careers, bringing technical accomplishment and delight in making music together.
The Zelter String Quartet: A family of musicians
The Zelter String Quartet is comprised of violinists Gallia Kastner and Kyle Gilner, violist Carson Rick, and cellist Alan Hon. Since 2018, the ensemble has performed traditional string quartet repertoires as well as contemporary compositions. Its members also work as session musicians, frequently recording music for film and television soundtracks.
For Kastner, the quartet’s closeness is central to its success.
“The Zelter Quartet is like a family,” she says. “We prioritize our relationships and our well- being with one another. It never feels like work to us.” She describes the experience simply: “It’s just my three brothers and me playing.”
The musicians listen and respond to one another, balancing precision with spontaneity and giving each composition their full attention.
Asked about her favorite pieces to perform, Kastner offers “I get asked that question a lot. In all honesty, it’s whatever music we are currently playing (or rehearsing).”
Their experience recording for film and television also makes them natural partners for a program that moves between classical music, opera and cinematic suspense.
A voice for powerful women
Mezzo-soprano Meagan Martin joins the quartet with a background in opera, an international performance career and a reputation for dramatic flair. Her father is a conductor, flutist, and music professor, and her mother was a clarinetist in the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra for twenty-five years. Martin went on to earn her master’s and doctoral degrees at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, as well as a bachelor’s degree in German.
Her career includes opera performances and art song concerts worldwide. Martin is particularly drawn to works that portray women of strength and complexity. She premiered the title role in Carla Lucero and Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s opera Juana about the trailblazing scholar, poet, and nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and has also premiered multiple song cycles inspired by Jane Austen heroines.
Martin is known for her coloratura singing, a demanding classical vocal style that features rapid runs, intricate ornamentation and wide melodic leaps. It requires exceptional breath control, agility and precision. Combined with her theatrical instincts, these skills allow her to bring both emotional depth and dramatic intensity to her performances.
Classical music, cinematic suspense and candlelight
The program’s title, Music in the Shadows, reflects its mix of classical repertoire and Halloween film selections. Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor moves through contrasting moods, with rich harmonies and passages that can feel mysterious, restless and intensely lyrical. Schubert and Handel bring their own dramatic sensibilities to the program, while the film selections tap into the suspense and atmosphere associated with Halloween.
The candlelit setting of the Pasadena Mausoleum adds to the experience, offering a change of pace from the usual concert hall. The combination of intimate surroundings and live performance invites listeners to hear these works with fresh attention.
For the Zelter Quartet and Martin, the evening is also an opportunity to share music beyond the boundaries of a traditional classical concert. The repertoire offers something for seasoned listeners and newcomers alike, from the intricate interplay of a string quartet to the expressive range of the human voice and the familiar sounds of film.
Presented by Melodia Mariposa, Music in the Shadows offers Pasadena audiences a chance to experience the youthful partnership in an unusual setting, with a program that combines classical artistry, theatrical drama and a Halloween twist.
