A group of family-owned businesses has shaped Manasota Key for 3 decades

If you’ve ever spent time on Florida’s picturesque Manasota Key, chances are you’ve stumbled upon one of the local staples run by the Manasota Key Group. Whether it was a plate of smoked pulled pork nachos on the beach, an ahi tuna dish by the water, or a bite of creamy coconut pie after a night of live music and laughter, the Atamanchuck family has probably had a hand in the experience. For three decades, this tight-knit family and their dedicated team have built more than just restaurants—they’ve built cornerstones of the Englewood community.

It all started 30 years ago when Rocket and Sue Atamanchuck moved to the area from New York, where the family had been in the restaurant business for generations. Looking to continue their legacy and plant new roots, they purchased what would become their flagship restaurant, Lock N Key. Today, the Manasota Key Group (or MKG) has grown to include three bustling restaurants, a downtown market, and a marina—which is currently undergoing a full rebuild after two devastating hurricanes in 2024.

Through every chapter of growth and every challenge, one thing has remained at the heart of the MKG story: family. That includes not only the Atamanchucks—Rocket, Sue, Danny, Mike, and Chris—but also managing partner Scott Barber and longtime family friend Ashley Dignam, who now leads catering and events. The team, which has grown to nearly 300 employees, is fueled by the same values that got them started: hard work, hospitality, and a deep love for their community.

“Our business is a family,” Ashley says. “The staff comes together each day to give our customers the best food and atmosphere experience possible. We have patrons who’ve been loyal since the 90s, and new visitors who feel like regulars after just one visit.”

Each MKG location brings something unique to the table. At SandBar, you’ll be greeted by the mouthwatering aroma of smoked meats wafting from the beachside smoker. Pulled pork nachos are a local favorite, but it’s not all barbecue—Lock N Key’s tropical island-inspired fare features standout dishes like coconut shrimp and seared ahi tuna, finished off with their signature house-made coconut cream pie. Over at Magnolia’s on the Bay, things take a more refined turn, with a seasonal menu that might include sea bass or a tender pork chop paired with market-fresh vegetables and house-crafted sushi.

But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. In October 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton ripped through the area, forcing all of the MKG locations to close temporarily. With nearly 300 employees suddenly out of work, it could’ve been a breaking point. Instead, the community rallied. A SpotFund campaign launched by the team raised over $200,000 in support of staff—proof of the deep goodwill the family has fostered over the years.

“Rocket and Sue do so much for the community, and when we needed help, the town gave right back,” Ashley says. “That kind of loyalty and care—it’s not something you see every day.”

Today, three of MKG’s five businesses are back open. Magnolia’s is set to reopen this fall, and the marina is projected to return in 2026, stronger than ever. Through it all, the mission hasn’t changed: serve the town they love, welcome everyone like family, and grow in a way that creates opportunity for others.
