Emeryville

This expansive East Bay spot has been a go-to for great food, drinks & patio vibes since 2011

2025-07-03

Tucked into a once-industrial stretch of Emeryville, just where the East Bay edges into Oakland, Honor Kitchen & Cocktails brings something rare to the neighborhood: a restaurant that manages to be both stylish and unpretentious, both inventive and deeply comforting. Since opening in 2011, Honor has become a go-to gathering spot for locals—where the bar is always buzzing, the food consistently delivers, and regulars know they can count on a great playlist and a strong pour.

Owner Gar Truppelli chose the name “Honor” with intention. It’s not just about branding—it’s about values. The restaurant pays respect to good food, good drinks, and the good company that comes with both. That spirit of integrity and hospitality runs through everything, from the rotating chef specials built on seasonal ingredients to the expertly balanced cocktails lining the bar. Walk through the doors, and you’ll find a space that’s as much about people as it is about plates.

“We love people, music, good food, making memories,” says Melanie Kronemann, part of the team helping bring the Honor experience to life. And that’s exactly what Honor feels like—a place where people come not just to eat, but to be together.

The building itself has lived many lives, from a traditional German hofbräu to a sushi spot, before being reimagined as Honor Kitchen & Cocktails. That layered history isn’t hidden—it’s part of the charm. The interior is warm and rustic, with reclaimed wood, exposed brick, and moody lighting that invites you to linger. There’s character in every corner: mismatched vintage decor, the hum of laughter rising over music, and bartenders who remember your name and your go-to drink.

Even the exterior plays a role in the restaurant’s story. A bright mural by local artist Joey Rose wraps the building in color and personality. The artwork was created as part of Emeryville’s Sea Walls “Artists for Oceans” Mural Festival, connecting Honor not just to food culture but to public art, sustainability, and local pride.

The menu strikes a similar balance between approachable and elevated. Oysters on the half shell arrive with an apple-cucumber-champagne vinegar mignonette; deviled eggs get a caviar bump and a drizzle of Calabrian chili oil. Smash-style burgers, thin-crust flatbreads from the stone oven, and a Dungeness crab bucatini in prosecco-lemon cream sauce all share space on a menu that feels at once familiar and fresh.

The Big Lebowski Burger—a house favorite—comes stacked with brie, smoked bacon-onion marmalade, and Duke’s mayo on a fresh-baked bun. It’s decadent but balanced, hearty but refined. Or try one of their artisan flatbreads like Ezzo’s Pepperoni with mozzarella, provolone, and roasted Fresno peppers. These are comfort dishes, but dressed for a night out.

Behind the bar, the cocktail list is as thoughtful as the food. Signature drinks change with the season, but the attention to detail doesn’t waver. The bar team blends creativity with precision, offering everything from classic Old Fashioneds to playful house infusions. Pair your drink with happy hour snacks or linger over dinner with a bottle from the carefully curated wine list.

In a city with no shortage of new restaurants, Honor stands out by doing the simple things very well—and doing them with heart. Whether you're sipping something cold in the lounge, watching the game from the bar, or splitting a pizza with friends on the patio, you’ll feel the through-line: this is a place built with care, for the community it serves.

And the community has noticed. With a strong local following, a deeply rooted team, and an events director who recently became Chairman of Emeryville Restaurant Week, Honor has firmly established itself as a neighborhood anchor. It's a space where quality and consistency matter, but so does vibe. Where you’re just as likely to celebrate a birthday as you are to stop in solo and feel right at home.

For over a decade, Honor Kitchen & Cocktails has raised the bar—literally and figuratively—on what a neighborhood restaurant can be. The name says it all: Honor to the ingredients, to the craft, and most importantly, to the people who walk through the door.
