Student taken into custody after firearm found in locker: Sterling Police
By Sharon Wren,
11 hours agoA student has been taken into custody after Sterling Police were alerted about a potential firearm in a student’s possession at school, according to a news release from the Sterling Police Department.
Sterling Police Department learned there was a potential firearm in the possession of a student at Challand Middle School (CMS) on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at about 11:47 a.m., during the course of an investigation. The Sterling Police School Resource Officer and Challand Middle School Administrative personnel were immediately notified about the potential firearm. A search of the student and the student’s locker was conducted, based on the information, and CMS personnel found a loaded firearm during the search, the release said. The Sterling Police School Resource Officer secured and took possession of the loaded firearm and the student was then taken into custody by Sterling Police.
The name of the student will not be released, as the student is a juvenile, and charges are pending.
“The safety and security of all students and staff is of the utmost importance to Sterling Unit 5 administration and staff, as well as Sterling Police Department,” the release said. “The cohesive relationship and priority of student safety from both entities led to the quick intervention and ending of what could have been a potentially dangerous or tragic incident.”
The investigation is ongoing, but Sterling Police have identified those involved and believe this to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to Sterling students.
