New Safe Haven Baby Box is first in Iowa Quad Cities

By Linda Cook,

A new Safe Haven Baby Box has come to Davenport.

The box will give mothers in crisis a safe, anonymous way to surrender their newborns. It's at MercyOne Genesis Davenport Medical Center on East Rusholme Street

This is the first Safe Haven box in the Iowa Quad Cities.

"This is a safe box. So it's air-conditioned or it's heated. And we are a 24/7 facility so we're going to be at this box within 90 seconds to get that baby out, get that baby safe and get that baby the care they need," said Lauren Lovedy, emergency room department supervisor.

The project was made possible through donations to the MercyOne Genesis Foundation. A blessing and official unveiling will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Two varieties of Grace canned chicken sausages sold in five states are the subject of a federal public health alert -- and shoppers are being urged to check their pantries. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued the alert on October 6 after discovering that the products were illegally imported from Jamaica, which is not eligible to export meat or poultry products to the United States.

I Checked Walmart's Beef to See Where It Comes From - Here's What I Found

I wanted to find out where Walmart's beef comes from, so I visited a Walmart store in Oregon to see what information I could find in the beef department and the packaging. Earlier this week, I published an article on NewsBreak sharing about where Kroger has been sourcing its beef from - Where Kroger Is Getting Its Beef From Right Now - Here's What to Know. I have been wondering where other grocery stores are sourcing their meat from as well. So I went into a Walmart store in Oregon this morning to see what I could find.

That Yellow on Your Broccoli Isn’t Just a Color Change and Here’s Why It's Important

Broccoli is one of those vegetables I used to grab without giving it much thought. If the bunch looked mostly green and the stalks seemed fine, into the cart it went. But there’s one little detail worth checking before you buy it, and it only takes a few seconds to spot.

This Herb Was Used for Anxiety Attacks Before Xanax Existed

Passionflower has been used as a folk remedy for anxiety for generations, long before Xanax or other prescription options existed. What's interesting is that it's been studied directly against a prescription anti-anxiety medication, with some promising results. I keep it on hand for days when anxiety feels like it's creeping up. 😊

The Cookie Jar Favorite That Deserves a Comeback

Butterscotch used to show up everywhere—pudding cups, hard candies, church-supper desserts, and cookie tins—and these soft chewies are a good reminder of why. They bake up with tender centers, lightly golden edges, and pockets of butterscotch chips that turn melty and almost caramel-like while they’re warm. That deep brown-sugar flavor makes them taste a little more old-fashioned than the usual chocolate chip cookie, in the best possible way. Pour a glass of milk or make some coffee and suddenly you’ve got the kind of simple homemade treat that feels like it could have come straight from a well-used family recipe box.

I Was Skeptical Until I Cut the First Slice

Chicken meatloaf sounds like the sensible choice right up until garlic and Parmesan get involved. Then things change fast. This version bakes into a juicy, savory loaf with a golden exterior and plenty of cheesy, garlicky flavor running through every slice. It has the comfort of the meatloaf you grew up with, but without feeling like you’ve eaten the same dinner a hundred times. And that first warm slice? That’s the moment the ground chicken starts making a lot more sense.

This Is What I Make When Half a Head of Cabbage Needs a Plan

Cabbage has a habit of hanging around the refrigerator after you use half of it, and this country beef cottage pie gives the rest somewhere worthwhile to go. Savory ground beef and tender cabbage become the hearty base, while a generous layer of potatoes turns golden across the top as everything bakes together. Underneath, the filling gets rich and saucy, with the cabbage soaking up all that beefy flavor instead of tasting like an afterthought. It’s exactly the sort of farmhouse-style dinner that can turn inexpensive, ordinary ingredients into something you actually look forward to pulling from the oven.

Mississippi Mud Potatoes Are the Side Dish Everyone Devours

Mississippi Mud Potatoes coat tender diced potatoes in a creamy mixture of cheddar, cream cheese, and sour cream. As the casserole bakes, the sauce melts around every potato and the top develops bubbling, golden patches. Bacon can bring smoky crunch, while onions or green onions add savory freshness. The finished dish is rich, cheesy, and substantial enough to challenge the main course for attention.
