Rock Island among top counties for deer crashes: IDOT
By Sharon Wren,
1 days agoFall can be a dangerous time for drivers as crashes between vehicles and deer become more common. According to statistics from Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Rock Island County came in at #10 for the top Illinois counties for crashes involving deer in 2025, with 310. Cook County came in at #1 with 559. Paul Wappel, Public Information Officer with IDOT, spoke with Our Quad Cities News via Zoom to explain why drivers need to pay careful attention to roads this time of year.
“Although a collision with deer can happen, of course, at any time, we're approaching the state of Illinois' time of year when most crashes occur,” he said. “Last year, 41% of crashes involving deer in the state of Illinois occurred in October, November and December, with November being the highest risk month. Rural areas were the site of 69% of crashes involving deer. Eight out of 10 collisions were at twilight or nighttime.”
“We want to remind the public that you're going to see more deer on the roads because it's peak mating season, which lasts through December. Deer are on the move throughout the state, just about everywhere, and of course that increases your chances of encountering one at any time. So, stay alert, even during you know routine trips on your daily commute.”
Wappel has tips to keep drivers safe on the roads this time of year. “Deer populations can thrive in urban, suburban, rural environments. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in areas with deer crossing signs. Scan the sides of the road for eye shine, the reflection of headlights in their eyes. Prepare for the unexpected.”
“Deer may stop in the middle of the road and not get out of the way for oncoming vehicles; slow down if you see a deer. They move in groups, anticipate if you see one, anticipate that others will be following. Buckle up, it's the law in Illinois. It's also your best defense if you're in a crash. Don't veer for deer. What do we mean by that? If a collision with the deer is inevitable, glance your vehicle off the deer and try to avoid swerving into the opposite lanes of traffic or off the road. That could be hazardous, could be deadly, unfortunately.”
He says that if a collision with a deer does happen, there are important steps for drivers to take. “If you strike a deer, stay in your vehicle, turn on your hazard lights. Call 911. Do not exit the vehicle to check on an injured deer or to pull it from the road.” He said drivers who wish to claim a deer involved in a crash or to report possession of a deer killed in a crash can click here for more information.
