Illinois announces new income eligibility for school meals

The Illinois State Board of Education has announced new income eligibility for the National School Lunch Program.

The new guidelines went into effect at the start of the summer. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) says the school lunch program allows the highest-poverty schools in the nation to serve free breakfast and lunch to students at no extra cost to the district. Last year, more than 930,000 students at 489 different schools had access to free meals because of the program.
