Illinois law expands affordable housing investments

Affordable housing investments are expanding under a new Illinois law.

Senate Bill 3086 allows Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs to invest in the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust. The fund is focused on building and preserving affordable and workforce housing, creating union construction jobs and fostering community development. The treasurer and labor leaders toured a 72-story construction site in Streeterville that's receiving this investment. There are other investments spanning from the Quad Cities to Crystal Lake and Decatur.

Axelrath, an addiction medicine specialist, said going after drug traffickers doesn’t make people stop using substances. In fact, she said it disrupts “an already potent and unpredictable drug supply.” Demand doesn’t go down after a bust. New players come to market who could be peddling an even more toxic product.
