Hot weather returning next week

By Sean Kennedy,

2026-08-29

After a perfect week over the last few days with temperatures in the low to mid 80s things are going to heat up here soon.

Right at the end of the month looking into September temperatures are going to be rising into the upper 80s and low 90s.

Along with these temperatures, dew points are also expected to rise throughout the week which will increase the humidity.

With the rising humidity and temperatures in the 90s we will see feels like temperatures rising well into the triple digits, so stay cool out there.

These three-ingredient lemon bars prove you don’t need a long shopping list to make something that tastes sunny, sweet, and completely dessert-worthy. Each square delivers bright lemon flavor with a soft, tender texture and just enough sweetness to balance that citrusy tang. A light dusting of powdered sugar can make the tops look bakery-ready, while the centers stay moist and luscious underneath. They’re the kind of simple lemon treat that tastes especially good chilled, when that fresh citrus flavor becomes even brighter and every little square feels like a cool burst of sweetness.

This Sandwich Actually Gets Better While You Wait

Most sandwiches punish you for making them too early. This Italian sandwich has other plans. Give those layers of savory deli meats, cheese, tangy toppings, and bold Italian flavors some time together and everything starts settling into the bread in the best possible way. Each slice gets a little salty, a little tangy, a little rich, with enough texture to keep you coming back for another piece. It’s the rare party food where making it ahead isn’t a compromise—it may be the reason the sandwich tastes so good when everyone finally arrives.

The frosting you'll want on every cake this holiday season

If you're going to spend the holidays baking, you might as well have one frosting recipe you can count on for everything. This one comes together with just four ingredients and five minutes of mixing, no candy thermometer, no cooking on the stove. It's rich, tangy, and holds its shape well enough to pipe onto cupcakes or spread thick over a layer cake.

This Oil Was Used for Hair Growth Before Minoxidil Existed

Rosemary has been used for scalp and hair health for generations, long before minoxidil became the standard treatment. In 2015, researchers actually put rosemary oil head-to-head against minoxidil in a clinical trial, and the results got people talking. I use a rosemary-infused oil regularly, partly for that history and partly because it just feels nice on the scalp. 😊

I’d Never Eat This Sandwich Cold Again

An Italian sub is already hard to argue with, but pressing the whole thing until the bread turns crisp and the cheese goes melty changes the conversation completely. Salami, ham, and turkey pile together under pepper jack, giving every bite salty, savory richness with just enough heat to keep things interesting. Then there’s that toasted exterior—the golden, crunchy part that shatters slightly before you reach the warm layers underneath. Suddenly the sandwich you’ve eaten a hundred times feels like somebody finally remembered to finish the job.

I found this cake in a church cookbook and never stopped making it

I first saw this recipe years ago in a tattered church cookbook, the kind with splattered pages and hand drawn hearts next to all the best recipes, and it's been in my rotation ever since.

The old-fashioned cream cheese pound cake everyone asks about

Butter alone can't give a pound cake this velvety crumb. Cream cheese is the difference, and it keeps every slice from falling apart. Butter and cream cheese are beaten together until fluffy, which gives the cake a dense, moist crumb without any baking soda or baking powder. It is rich but not overly sweet, so it needs no glaze. I like a slice plain with a cup of tea.

This Custard Pie Magically Forms Its Own Crust

Magic crust custard pie earns its name by accomplishing something that feels almost impossible: a simple batter separates as it bakes, creating a delicate crust and creamy custard center without rolling or fitting pastry dough. The top becomes lightly golden while the inside stays soft, smooth, and gently sweet. Nutmeg or vanilla gives the filling its familiar old-fashioned aroma, and the thin crust provides just enough structure to hold a clean slice. It is an ideal dessert for anyone who loves homemade pie but would happily skip the most intimidating part of preparing one.

The One Crispy Apple I'm Choosing Over Honeycrisp Right Now

Learn about an apple variety that is super crisp and firm that I am getting at apple orchards over Honeycrisp this month. It took a long time from when the Crimson Crisp apple was first bred until it was available to be grown commercially. It was first developed in the 1970s by the PRI (Purdue, Rutgers, and Illnois) co-operative. It wasn't until 2006 that the apple was released for growers. That is a long time in the development process. You don't get rich quick by developing a new apple variety!

Trader Joe's is now stocking ribeye and other steaks from Argentina. Here is what you need to know. I have heard a lot lately in the news about more beef being imported from Argentina. The Ground Beef Dinner We Ate Before Everything Became a Burger

Before ground beef automatically meant tacos, cheeseburgers, or another casserole, there was hamburger steak and gravy. Thick beef patties browned in a skillet, then covered in rich, savory gravy until the whole pan smelled like the kind of supper somebody’s grandmother could make without looking at a recipe. Spoon that gravy over the meat and suddenly an inexpensive package of ground beef feels like a full Sunday-style dinner. It’s simple, filling, and built around the sort of ingredients families have stretched into satisfying meals for generations.
