Carruthers was shot Tuesday afternoon in Stuart, Iowa, when he responded to gunfire. Responding officers found a deceased female when they arrived on the scene.

Carruthers was one of the first to arrive, and encountered a man - later identified as Austin Nichols Reed, 46 - who was armed with a shotgun. After Reed shot Carruthers, other officers took Reed into custody without further incident.

Reed faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder of a police officer.

Carruthers was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition on Wednesday.

"Please keep him and the men and women of the Iowa Sate Patrol in your thoughts and prayers tonight," the release concludes.
