New income-restricted housing is coming to Moline.

Renew Moline’s Board of Directors of Renew Moline said it has acquired Washington Square Apartments, a 10-unit building at 316-17th Street in downtown Moline.

The late-19th century building originally contained five, three-story townhome-style units. It was constructed under the direction of Charles H. Deere and designed by Merton Yale Cady, Mr. Deere’s brother-in-law, who was an important architect/builder in the Midwest at the time.

The building underwent a complete interior renovation in 2012 and features five one-bedroom one bath units and five two-bedroom, one and a half bath units. The units are all income-restricted to 50% of Area Median Income (AMI) and 120% AMI. There are currently two, one-bedroom units available for rent to tenants with incomes at or under 50% of area median income, or around $32,000 annually.

“Renew Moline had a chance to acquire Washington Square and the Board determined that it was an important and strategic purchase,” said Renew Moline Board Chairman Carrie O’Neill. “Not only does the property provide much-needed affordable housing, but it is important to keep such assets in local ownership. We did not want to miss this opportunity.”

“We are grateful for the support of the City of Moline and GROWTH Corporation, who have trusted us to be excellent stewards of the property for our resident tenants and downtown,” said Alexandra Elias, President and CEO of Renew Moline. “We look forward to learning more about Washington Square’s history and celebrating it with the community.”
