Wendy Walljasper running for seat on Scott County Board of Supervisors

Another QC resident has announced plans to run for a seat on the Scott County Board of Supervisors.

Wendy Walljasper is campaigning for a seat on the board in this November’s election as an independent candidate. She says the partisanship of national politics doesn’t always fit the local issues affecting Scott County residents.

“I’ve worked with people from all walks of life,” she said. “From growing up in a small farming community, working for two decades in nonprofits to serve all kinds of folks trying to rebuild their lives, to sitting across the table from friends and family who work blue-collar jobs. At the end of the day, what connects us is that we’re all just trying to take care of our families.”

“Working in an industry that’s largely funded by government contracts, I’ve seen how government works and how bad things can get when it doesn’t. I want to find ways to empower our neighbors to create abundance that works for all of Scott County while making the county government work for our community and keep decision-making local. I’m not afraid to try new ideas or look at things from a new perspective if it will get the job done.”

Walljasper and fellow independent candidate Brendan O’Brien have started hosting what they call Neighbors’ Assemblies. The events are part potluck and part work session, bringing the community together to discuss what’s weighing on them and find solutions that community members can put into action now.

“A major concern that’s come up in our conversations is food insecurity,” Walljasper said. “So we’re trying to contact churches to help them start Giving Gardens.  After attending an Assembly, people have had conversations with local restaurants to connect them with food rescue programs and others are working to connect their friends to the local Gift Garden program. We’re working to make sure seniors have food in the fridge and that working moms have something to feed their kids.”
