Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosting award gala

The Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GQCHCC) is hosting its 2026 Signature Mariposa Gala & Awards Celebration on October 16 at 5 p.m. at Rhythm City Casino, 7077 Elmore Avenue in Davenport. The Gala is the Chamber’s premier annual fundraiser and signature community event. It gathers business leaders, community partners, members and supporters for an evening of dinner, live entertainment, a silent auction, awards and networking.

This year’s theme is “Mariposas, Beyond the Garden: Expanding Our Roots, Elevating Our Community” and reflects the Chamber’s commitment to growth, cultural pride and meaningful impact throughout the region.

GQCHCC invites the community to nominate outstanding leaders and organizations for these awards:

Small Business of the Year — This award is presented to a local business excelling at management and growth that is actively involved in addressing and supporting Hispanic/multicultural needs.
Bob Ontiveros/Group O Corporation of the Year — This award is presented to a business offering extraordinary resources and services that make a positive difference for the Hispanic and multicultural community.
Sergio Mendoza/Advocate of the Year — This award recognizes a person, not affiliated with any organization, who has made an outstanding contribution to the Hispanic/multicultural business community.
Nonprofit of the Year — This award is presented to a nonprofit organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the Hispanic/multicultural and business community.

Nominated businesses must be active members in good standing with the Chamber. A list of active members is available on the Chamber’s website. Community members are encouraged to submit nominations through the online nomination form.

I spent two weeks in Rome and throughout Italy earlier this month, my longest stay since attending the funeral of Pope Francis and the conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV. I filed stories during the day, but with a heat index surging over 100 degrees, the conversations that mattered the most often started after dark, in Curia offices, in church sanctuaries, and at trattoria tables, where I drank more espresso than any human ever ought to.
