The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center (MLK Center) invites the Quad Cities to its 36th annual Thanksgiving event. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a delicious, free Thanksgiving meal including turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce and pie.  The goal for this year is to give away at least 7,000 free meals. The Center is at 630 Ninth Street in Rock Island.

“We are well aware that food insecurity is a huge problem in normal times,” said Jerry Jones, MLK Center Executive Director. “Heading into the holidays, we know that families are hurting this year more than ever. This event doesn’t solve the root causes of hunger, but it offers some relief, as well as the comfort of a traditional Thanksgiving meal. This is a community effort, a true labor of love from donors, partners and volunteers. This is Dr King’s vision for a Beloved Community in action.”

Free meals will be distributed November 21-23 at these locations, while supplies last each day.

·         Friday, November 21: curbside pickup at the MLK Center from 12 – 5 p.m.

·         Saturday, November 22: curbside pickup at the MLK Center from 11a.m. -5 p.m.

·         Sunday, November 23: dine-in service from 12 – 4 p.m. in the MLK Center’s banquet room.

Curbside service will be from the parking lot on the west side of the building. Additional curbside pickup locations will be announced in November. Delivery service is available on Saturday, November 22 for orders of 25 meals or more, and for disabled or elderly people. Click here to place orders by November 14. Those who wish to pick up 25 meals or more on November 21 or 22 can click here to place orders by November 14.

Hundreds of volunteers, many who have been working for over a decade, make the Thanksgiving event possible. Businesses that wish to sponsor this event can contact Shaniece Payne at payne.shaniece@rigov.org. Residents can donate by clicking here.
