INTERVIEW: “Checking In” with The Gray Matters Collective before Valentine’s Day

2025-01-29With Valentine’s Day approaching, feelings of loneliness can also start to arise. According to a Gallup Survey, one in five people say they feel lonely. That’s why we’re “Checking In” with James Castillo, a mental health advocate and volunteer with The Gray Matters Collective.

7-Eleven clerk revives three overdosed customers
A 7-Eleven clerk in Denver has resuscitated three customers with Narcan in the past few months, and one of the rescues was witnessed by this reporter. Arica Crowley works in the 7-Eleven across from Quebec Square. She said she didn’t sign up to save lives when she applied at the retailer but doesn’t mind the extra duty. She said what disappoints her most is that many people, when revived, become angry and storm off without accepting further help. Coming out of the high with Narcan has been described as a hellacious experience.

Shanna Genelle Peoples has been missing from Geneva, Alabama (Geneva County), since September 8, 2011. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), she's missing from Eunola, Alabama, but most sources indicate it's Geneva, a six-minute drive from Eunola.

Sweep of homeless camp ruined Sunken Gardens Park neighborhood, resident says
The City of Denver caused the area near Sunken Gardens Park to become overrun with homeless people using drugs after crews dismantled a 130-person encampment on 8th Avenue, down the street from the park, according to a mother in the neighborhood.
