High Speed Rail Authority chief resigns after watchdog probe into consultant expenses

The chief executive of the embattled California High Speed Rail Authority resigned suddenly following a watchdog report that found the authority had improperly subsidized luxury travel upgrade and rideshares for consultants. Department of Finance Director Joe Stephenshaw will serve as interim CEO, starting on Tuesday. Chief of Staff Mark Tollefson will be “active” until then, according to comments made at the HSRA Board of Directors meeting Thursday. Ian Choudri announced his resignation Wednesday night in an internal email, which was first reported by CalMatters . On Thursday, rail authority board Chair Steve Kawa publicly announced Choudri’s departure, which was effective immediately, at a meeting in Los Angeles. “We thank Mr. Choudri for his service and his contributions to the High Speed Rail program, and we wish him and his family well. The governor appointed new members of the board this year to bring stronger accountability, oversight and transparency to the project,” Kawa said. “Today’s news reflects the board’s commitment to accountability and transparency, consistent with the governor’s mandate under new board leadership at the authority.
