Raimier Walker is one step closer to representing Team USA in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Last weekend, the 19-year-old Liverpool native snagged first place at the USA Boxing National Qualifiers in Detroit. Competing in the 125lb division, Walker went 4-0 earning an invitation to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials this upcoming December.
Last summer, Walker won the National Golden Gloves competition in Tulsa, Oklahoma. CNY Central sports director Tommy Sladek spoke with Walker and his father, Raymond Walker, discussing Raimier's work schedule and tournaments that took him across the country, as well as Spain and Serbia.
"I didn't want him to get caught up in the streets," Raymond Walker said, when describing how he got his son into boxing . "I did it more for discipline and structure."
Walker earned his GED last year, and works at McDonald's when he is neither sleeping nor working in the gym.
"I switched my work shifts to overnights," Walker said. "Just so I could go to the gym."
Walker is now one step away from an Olympic dream. For him, it is one step closer to helping his family.
"I want to get [Walker's family] out of poverty," Walker said. "I want to put everybody in a good position."
For Walker, it is back to training. Trials take place from Dec. 2-9 in Lafayette, Louisiana. If Walker wins his weight class, he will be heading to Paris to represent the United States.
