CBL Roundup: Durand’s home run powers Silversmiths to win

CENTRAL NEW YORK (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – The smoke is clearing, but the baseball is heating up across both collegiate baseball leagues, as all five local teams are in action, with a local rivalry playing out for the second out of eight times this season in Little Falls. Here is your Collegiate Baseball Roundup for Friday, June 9:

Mohawk Valley 11, Utica 10

The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs spoiled Northern Illinois’ Andre Demetral’s two-home run game and three home runs overall with a five-run fifth inning and handed the Utica Blue Sox their third straight loss in a row, 11-10.

Rockland Community College’s Ben Partridge had the other home run for the Blue Sox (2-5), who led 7-4 after 5 ½ innings. Demetral finished two-for-three with the two home runs, while Partridge finished two-for-four. Alex Canino allowed just two runs through four innings of work, however, the three Utica pitchers combined for three strikeouts – one for each of them. Siena’s Bill Rozakis was the hardest hit of the three Utica pitchers, giving up six earned runs in just one and one-third innings pitched.

Meanwhile, Mohawk Valley (4-2) took advantage of three Utica errors to send 18 batters to the plate in the sixth and seventh innings alone. Meanwhile, Diamond Dawg starter Matt Alduino and reliever Ethan Patch combined for all ten of Mohawk Valley’s strikeouts, while all four of them combined to allow eight walks. All but two Mohawk Valley hitters had hits last night, and all but three picked up RBI for the team.

Watertown 11, Boonville 5

The Watertown Rapids jumped out to a 7-0 lead after five and a half innings on Thursday, June 8 and never looked back, as Watertown starter Ryan Peters picked up his second win of the season, 11-5. Boonville (2-3) has now lost three out of its last four games.

Peters gave up just one run in six innings of work, striking out three and pushing his earned run average down to 1.13. At the plate, the Rapids’ (3-4) Owen Parliament was responsible for five of the teams 11 runs, including a two-run home run in the sixth. The SUNY Oswego infielder went two-for-five on the night with three RBI, but also racked up three strikeouts.

On the other side, the Lumberjacks (2-3) were left hitless for the first four innings and only had two hits through six full innings. They were led by Prince George Community College’s Santiago Jimenez, who went two-for-three on the night with a double. Onondaga Community College’s Jacob Khouri managed to pick up two RBI for Boonville, on a single to left field in the Lumberjacks’ 3-run eighth.

Oneonta 17, Glens Falls 7 (eight innings)

The Oneonta Outlaws scored at least one run in all but the fourth inning, including a five-run fifth and a four-run second to hand the Glens Falls Dragons a run-rule loss, 17-7 in eight innings. Due to the mercy rule, the Dragons (1-3) have now had their last two games end early.

Marist College’s Bayram Hot had a hot debut for the Outlaws (2-3), going four-for-five with a triple and an RBI. All but two Oneonta batters had hits, and six of those had multi-hit games as the Outlaws went 18 for 38 at the plate. The Oneonta batters were led by Rhode Island’s Jack Hopko and Erskine’s Caden Marsters, who both went three-for five and combined for seven RBI. On the mound, Oneonta was led by Logan Waldschmidt, who struck out five of the 11 Glens Falls batters he faced.

Meanwhile, the Glens Falls pitching staff only combined for one strikeout, while allowing 18 hits and seven walks. Castleton’s Riley Orr was the hardest hit Dragon, going only two innings while allowing eight runs on 12 hits.

New York Collegiate Baseball League

Sherrill 6, Syracuse Salt Cats 4

Sherrill’s Brandyn Durand was responsible for four of Sherrill’s six runs on Thursday night and hit what turned out to be the game-winning home run in the Silversmiths’ 6-4 victory at Onondaga Community College.

The Salt Cats (1-3) led 4-3 after six innings, thanks to a three-run sixth inning, all of them by Thomas More University’s Jacob Caruso. Caruso drove in two on a double in the sixth, then came home himself on a wild pitch. Syracuse’s pitching staff also combined for 16 strikeouts while allowing just two walks.

Siena’s Robert Moynihan picked up the win for Sherrill (2-0), only allowing one hit and one walk while also throwing four strikeouts. Moynihan is now fifth in the league in strikeouts with seven. Durand and Maine-Orono’s TJ Gormley both led the Silversmiths at the plate; both went three-for-five with two runs and both extra-base hits – Gormley had a double and scored on both of Durand’s hits.
