Brr! With 13 degrees and snow, Grandfather Mountain closes to visitors

Grandfather Mountain is closed due to snow and very cold, blustery conditions.

LINVILLE, N.C. — Grandfather Mountain is closed to visitors Tuesday due to snow and cold, blustery conditions.

Before noon, the state park posted on Facebook the current temperature at the top of the mountain was 13.1 degrees with a wind chill of -12.6 degrees.

Grandfather Mountain also shared as video of snow from the Half Moon Overlook.

In the Triangle, a freeze warning goes into effect overnight until 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Temperatures could plunge into the 20s with an even colder wind chill.

It will reopen Wednesday, weather permitting.

Guests can call 828-733-4337 before visiting the park to learn about the day's conditions and opening status.
