Jayettes softball starts season on hot streak, soccer heads to state
As the Bluejays soccer team earned a spot in the state tournament, Perry’s softball and baseball teams had their first full week of games. (Note: Events covered May 22-28) The Bluejays punched their state tournament ticket on May 24 with a 3-1 win over Glenwood. A combined effort from Anthony Chavez, Jonatan Banuelos and Alex Banuelos goals gave the edge through the posts while goalie Luis Castro had a good workout saving 11 shots from the Rams.
DC-Grimes Boys Soccer Takes On Iowa City Liberty Today
The Dallas Center-Grimes boys soccer team takes on Iowa City Liberty in the quarterfinals of state tournament in Des Moines today. Their season will be on the line against the Liberty Lightening at 4:20pm at the James W. Cownie Complex. The Mustangs are on a six game winning streak, but will have to beat the Lightening, who have 9 wins out of the Mississippi Conference.
Perry Soccer Plays in State Opener Today
The Perry soccer team will take the heralded trip to the capitol city today as one of the best eight teams in the state of Iowa in Class 2A. The 8th seeded Bluejays will take on defending state champion and top seed Davenport Assumption in a 1:00 quarterfinal battle this afternoon on Field 9 at the Cownie Complex.
Busy Schedule Starts Today for Wildcats
The Wildcats have a busy schedule this week, as the baseball and softball teams face off against opponents on five of the weekdays, with some weekend tournament action as well. The baseball team has doubleheaders all week except for Friday, facing off against the Woodward-Granger Hawks on the road tonight, hosts the Southwest Valley Timberwolves Wednesday and then traveling to take on the Pleasantville Trojans on Thursday, then have a single game against the Nodaway Valley Wolverines that they travel for. The softball team also travels to Woodward tonight for a single game, hosts Southwest Valley for a single game on Wednesday, and faces off against Pleasantville in a doubleheader Thursday, before traveling to Greenfield for a single game against Nodaway Valley. The softball team will then host the Wildcat Classic on Saturday, with the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders, Eagle Grove Eagles and Des Moines North Huskies all coming to Stuart to compete.
Brian Moon Classic Today in Stuart
The 2nd Annual Brian Moon Classic takes place in Stuart today. The slow pitch softball tournament is named after Brian Moon, who was a baseball player for Stuart-Menlo, and held a special love for the sport of baseball. Moon’s niece Nancy Moore tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she and other organizers hope to grow the tournament, and begin awarding annual scholarships to one baseball player and one softball player from West Central Valley.
State Track Champions in Guthrie County
Two school districts in Guthrie County saw athletes bring home gold medals from the state track meet. For Panorama, junior Jaidyn Sellers took the top spot in three races. She won the 2A girls 400m dash with a time of 56.67 seconds, the 2A girls 100m dash with a state record time of 12.06 seconds and the 2A girls 200m dash with a time of 24.98 seconds.
Perry High School Boys Soccer Punched Their Ticket to State
The Perry High School Boys Soccer team punched their ticket to the state tournament for the first time since 2018. The Blujays went (11-7) in regular season matches and finished third in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference standings and grabbed the top seed in the Class 2A Substate 8 Bracket. They defeated Carroll in the second round and then knocked off the second seeded Glenwood Rams by a score of 3 to 1 in the substrate finale to advance to the state tournament.

2nd Annual Brian Moon Classic to be Held This Weekend in Stuart
This weekend there will be a slow pitch softball tournament in Stuart. The Brian Moon Classic, named after Stuart-Menlo baseball player Brian Moon, is in its second year. Moon was a lover of baseball, and he held some records for a time, but passed in 2017. Moon’s niece Nancy Moore says that anyone may bring a team to join the tournament, just visit this website or show up the day of the tournament to register and pay the $200 team registration fee.
DC-Grimes Girls Soccer Punches Ticket to State
The Dallas Center-Grimes girls soccer team punches their ticket to the state tournament Thursday. The Mustangs were able to defeat and shut out the Norwalk Warriors by a score of 3 to 0. The left boot of junior Kylie Knief got things started for the Mustangs scoring a goal at the 16 minute mark in the first half. And then a perfect kick from junior Hannah Renz in a corner set piece allowed junior Olivia Cyr to score goal number two at the 6 minute mark in the first half. Finally, sophomore Landry Glascow would blow by the goalie keeper and score the third and final goal of the first half and game.
Panorama Girls Soccer Falls to Van Meter
The Panorama Panther girls soccer team was competing at a shot at the State tournament last night. They were up against the Van Meter Bulldogs. The Panthers were not only playing for a spot in the State tournament, but they were also looking for revenge. The Bulldogs were the first team to beat the Panthers back in April. The game was a defensive struggle in the first half. The game was scoreless after the first half.

ADM varsity soccer suffers a tough home loss in Semifinal Round of Class 3A Substate 8
The ADM varsity boys soccer team lost a tough match in the Class 3A Substate 8 semifinal round of the Iowa soccer playoffs in a 7-6 kickoff against the Xavier Saints in Adel last night. Both teams were tied at 0 after one half of play. Xavier got a on the scoreboard first when Elijah Ohde scored the first goal of the game which gave the Saints a 1-0 lead. Then with 10:07 left to play in the second half Junior Tom Hook tied the game up for ADM Tigers at 1, when he scored a goal in right in front of the Xavier Saint goal keeper. The match was all tied at one a piece when they both teams went to a shootout where both teams choose five players for shootout. It came down to the sixth and final shootout kicker of each team to decide the game. Owen Vasquez got the final kick by ADM goalkeeper Owen Evans for the game winner as ADM shootout kicker Chase Groves kick hit the top crossbar and deflected went out of play which sent the Xavier Saints the 7-6 win over the ADM Tigers. Xavier will now travel to Carlisle tomorrow to try to win a right to head to the Iowa State Soccer.
